If you are 20 yards into the process, no biggie, but if you are into it for a couple of hundred yards, you have a totally different situation. Once the process has commenced, if the above error is not corrected immediately, the result will be wasted line, and the process will have to be re-started. An under wrap can create a major problem, creating a pseudo drag that will create sufficient friction to break the line, as well as "digging" into the spool, eventually getting stuck, and resulting in line breakage. A quality wax will seal the porous surface of aluminum, providing protection against salt penetration, and the corrosion that will follow.īefore starting, make sure that you have a freely rotating spool of line and that there are no under wraps. Waxing the surface of the spool, and the spool body provides added protection. To protect your aluminum spools, it is a good idea that you wax and buff the empty spool with carnauba wax before putting the line on. When it comes to anodizing, the process often is more for looks than for longevity in regards to corrosion resistance. Contrary to popular belief, spools made of aluminum are not corrosion proof, aluminum can pit. Whiles Spectra fibers are unable to cause reel corrosion, salt can. Unlike other fishing lines braided Spectra® line has a very long useful life, years, unless damaged. I even have to the ability respool on the water.Ĭontact Basil Pappas at He has spooled all of my reels and is the man to contact for your spectra needs. How To Spool Jerry Brown Line One Spectra On Your Fishing Reel When the offshore season swings into high gear I change the mono on my reels after every trip, unless the rod doesn?t see any action. Then you hook up the fish of a lifetime and start saying silent prays while fighting the fish that the line holds. It saves you fish because a lot of people try and squeeze one more trip out of a reel loaded with all mono. ![]() Not to mention the fact that you usually end up throwing away a couple of hundred yards of brand new mono. Over the long run spooling up with spectra saves you money because instead of having to spool a whole reel you only have to spool a short topshot of mono onto of the spectra. During this time we have also landed swordfish and makos over the 400 pound mark, in addition to bluefin to 275lbs, all of which have the capability off spooling a 50 with straight mono.Ī lot of people scoff at the high price of hollow core spectra, but in the end I think it saves you money and fish. I have over 50 trips in the last five or so years under my belt and I could count on one hand the number of times the spectra has hit the water. Therefore you don?t have to worry about cutting your fingers or other lines off with the spectra. The primary reason is 90-95% of the fish in the noreast are in the 40-80 pound range and will not bring you into the spectra. I personally feel 200 yards is the right amount of mono to fish in the noreast canyons. From the comparisons I have read JB is considered to be the best product on the market. To note: I am sure izor line is a quality product, but I have never fished with it, and plan to continue using Jerry Brown sprectra on my reels. I am not sure how much mono a 50 wide holds, however, my 50 vsw is spooled with 500 yards of jerry brown and 200 yards of 80 momoi. I have all my offshore setups loaded with 130 jerry brown and 200 yards of either momoi or jinkai depending on my application. The ability to use fail-safe splices instead of bulky and unreliable knots, additional line capacity, and spectra?s shelf life which is upwards of ten years. Should I just stay with momoi diamond mono or is it worth the $ for big game braids for around here? Also on a 50 size reel what is recommended 135lb of 500 yards and a top shot of 100 or 80lb? Thanks JeffĪs you mentioned in you post there are a number of advantages to fishing with spectra. Also I understand a lil that hollow allows you to tie the top shot into the hollow line so there is no big knots to pass threw the guides, but is that really import on roller giudes? Also how much more line capacity can you put on the spool then regular braid no hollow. I know all the guys on the west coast live by the product, but just didn't see any guys here use it. I think my main concern is my fingers, a 200lb tuna can make using that line a lil dangerous. On all my inshore tackle I pretty much switched to using power pro and I like it a lot, but for big game I never used it. I wanted to know how popular these braided lines are here in the noreast, and if guys been using them Canyon fishing chunking, live lining, troiling. Whats up guys, I need some info on these spectra lines for my standup gear for tuna & sharks. ![]()
